People who follow the work of British comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant may already be aware of their friend, Karl Pilkington. Pilkington first rose to stardom on the Ricky Gervais podcast, where each show rapidly becomes an exploration of his odd and wonderful mind. So truthful, hilarious and insightful are his observations of day-to-day life, a scheme was hatched to star him in a travel show.
Now two seasons have been completed of An Idiot Abroad, and I highly recommend you seek them out. It is a travel show about someone who hates to travel; cultural anthropology as performed by a man who would rather sit at home and whinge about his boiler being on the fritz. On the DVD for the second season, I chanced across the strangely-titled bonus feature Pilko’s Pump Pants.
Beyond being something that must be seen to be believed, this is something I still don’t believe, even though I’ve seen it. Everything I’ve been able to Google about this makes me think this is 100% genuine. Whether it is or not, it is pure genius.
